Suburb Profile: Adamstown NSW
Situated several clicks East of Newcastle’s CBD; Adamstown has slowly grown into one of the more sought after suburbs in Newcastle’s inner-district. The suburb’s origins remain similar to many others in the city, beginning as a large space for Mining housing. While being only a 10 minute drive to Merewether Beach – one of Australia’s official Surfing Reserves – Adamstown is also a stone’s throw away from Westfield Kotara, which has quickly become the one-stop hub shopping centre in Newcastle due to its rapid and ongoing expansion projects.
Those who live in Adamstown often take advantage of the Fernleigh Track; a community exercise track spanning over 15kms from Adamstown to Belmont. Not to mention the numerous hiking and Mountain Biking trails that lead from Fernleigh into the Glenrock National Park in the neighbouring Merewether Heights.
It’s an ideal spot for families as it’s an easy commute to the city and is also home to a number of quality schools, including the St Pius X High School, Adamstown Primary School and St Columba’s Primary School.
Less than 10km from the Newcastle CBD lies the suburb of Adamstown Heights. It is divided between the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle City LGAs.
Commuters are served by the train stations in Kotara and Adamstown, which are stops on the Central Coast & Newcastle Line.

The Fernleigh Track is an attractive and popular 15km shared walking and cycling pathway from Adamstown to Belmont, created along the route of a former rail corridor in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie regions of New South Wales.
It provides a pleasant travel route through a bushland setting with links along the way to adjoining residential communities. The track is a popular facility, used for both localised commuting and recreational purposes.
A recent addition to the Track is an outdoors Fitness station located at the Westwood Avenue, Adamstown Heights Entrance.

Glenrock State Conservation Area, Entering at Yuelarbah Trail Car Park, Burwood Rd, Whitebridge.
Access from Fernleigh Track via Burwood Rd.
Yuelarbah walking track follows a 3.4km trail through the natural bush to Glenrock Lagoon, meeting up with the beach. On the way down to the Lagoon you will travel adjacent to Flaggy Creek, through wet gullies and coastal rainforest, and if that’s not enough, you’ll pass two waterfalls, before coming to Leichhardt’s lookout which offers excellent views over Glenrock Lagoon. The area was host to coal mines, evidenced by the visible coal in the ground and the rusted rails and train wheels left in the rocks along the beach. Fitness with a history lesson. You can do a return trip back up to the car park or continue north along the beach, past Burwood Beach with a final destination at Merewether Ocean Baths and Merewether Beach. From there you can continue all the way to Newcastle Beach following the Bather’s Way.
