Originally an area that was underwater at high tide, the area was slowly built up by ships dumping ballast and other reclamation work, which eventually saw an island grow out of the mud.
Located 4.4km northwest of Newcastle’s central business district, the suburb is named after Lord Carrington, governor of New South Wales in 1887 when the area was proclaimed a municipality and is bounded by Industrial Drive and Throsby Creek to the West and the Hunter River to the East and South.
Today, Carrington is a mix of residential, commercial and industrial development that is physically separated from other suburbs. It is close to the harbour and CBD services the Port, and as such, has expensive housing. It is accessible by Cowper Street bridge over Throsby Creek.
Carrington is characterised by tree-lined streets, character-filled heritage homes and new developments, capitalising on the waterfront of Throsby Creek.
