Suburb Profile: Lambton NSW

Lambton-North-Lambton-Newcastle-Suburb-Profile

Lambton was incorporated as a Municipality on 24 June 1871, having originally been established as a coal-mining township. The 1891 Census gave the population as 3,434.

It was the first municipality in Newcastle district to be lit by electric light a fact immortalised by local singer songwriter Bob Corbett with his sing – “The Lambton Lights”

By 1901, the town included 14 churches, a Music Hall, Assembly Rooms, a Temperance Hall, a Mechanics’ Institute, Miners’ Institute, a Post, Telegraph and Money Order Office, a Savings Bank, Court House, Fire Brigade, Council Chambers, and fine public schools.

In 1938 an Act of the New South Wales Parliament created a “City of Greater Newcastle”, incorporating 11 municipalities into one local government area, including Lambton.

Today the suburb is located 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from Newcastle’s central business district, with the major arterial roads of Griffiths RD / Newcastle RD, Turton RD and Croudace St forming some of its boundaries.

North Lambton is the neighbouring suburb to the north of Newcastle RD, providing housing to approximately 3,000 people in addition to Lambton’s population of around 5,000.

Lambton has a strong Community with several active community groups in the area.  The area has its own Multicultural Neighbourhood Centre.

Several community street libraries have been set up, catering for both children and adults
